This book is the first installment in the Big Nate series. The series follows Nate, a troublemaking 6th grader who always manages to find ways to land in detention. He is in detention so often, that one time he found a kid sitting in “his” seat and told him to move. He doesn't only go to detention though. He also is talented in chess, has a Social Studies teacher as his archenemy, and has a locker so messy it spills out and blocks the hallway. His hair is also just seven spiky tufts. The series basically tells about Nate and his best friends' adventures. Anyways, this book is hilarious because it displays Nate's wild determination and how he achieves everything he attempts, just not the way he would've thought. Basically, Nate gets a fortune in a fortune cookie saying that he will set a world record. Now, Nate believed in this fortune as he is so conceited that he thinks he is destined for greatness. Anyways, throughout the day he tries to set world records and gets in a bunch of unfortunate mishaps that lead to him getting detention by EVERY SINGLE TEACHER! When he goes to the detention room and the detention monitor finds that he has 7 detentions, she tells him that nobody in school history has gotten that many detentions in one day, meaning he did set a record! All in all, a hilarious read, a more simple yet effective plot, this is a great book. (It also kind of reminded me of Diary of a Wimpy Kid) Anyways, Happy Reading!
