For people who don't know, the I Survived series is a realistically fictional book series about fictional characters that survived actual natural disasters in history such as Hurricane Katrina, The California Wildfires, etc. The characters are all fake, but the rest of the story is based on real events and places. In this I Survived book, we go back to Glacier National Park, Montana, USA in 1967 during which Mel and her family are on a camping trip. A few days later their cabin is attacked by a grizzly bear and Mel's little brother very nearly DIES! After this scary encounter, they go to the park rangers, who offer no help at all by simply making it as though it was a bit unfortunate but nonetheless harmless. This reaction seemed a bit odd to me as it was a near death experience. Now they figure that something must be going on here. they team up with a scientist who studies grizzlies and together they uncover the horrifying truth. The reason the bears were attacking people and acting up (Mel's attack wasn't the only one, there had been a string of them) was that people kept littering, and the bears ate the litter mistaking it for food. The litter hurt them or damaged their throats and teeth, which prevented them from eating. Now this is where it gets interesting. It turns out, grizzlies come every night to a chalet up north, and fight to kill. Instead of stopping them, the people there cheer the grizzlies on. This is where the scariest part happens, as Mel is attacked and nearly KILLED as she accidentally stumbles into the "arena". Finally changes are made as on that same night, two women were killed by grizzlies. This book is great as it is extremely suspenseful, and really keeps you on edge. The plot thickens throughout the book and intensifies in complexity, making this book a great read. Now, Happy Reading!
